Dohyo-matsuri that we explained yesterday was held from 8:00AM today.

Here, we introduce you some essences of it:

From Tomozuna-Beya 28.08.2006

Our dohyo is reformed!  Here, we introduce how to do it!

Day 1

Dohyo is life ... sometimes it needs to get air

... pulling the plow over the dohyo ...

... crushing the earth

finished day 1

Day 2

... pushing earth into straw bags ...

... ready for tomorrow ...

Day 3

... putting the surface ... drawing a circle line ... whittling the earth along the line ...

... putting the straw bags ...

nearly finished ...

... putting the surface again ... make it smooth ... and FINISHED

Dohyo matsuri takes place before we re-start keiko. Dohyo-matsuri is a ritual ceremony whenever “dohyo” is made or reformed to pray that everything is going well. Therefore, it takes place every time before the basho as well.

From Tomozuna-Beya 25.08.2006

Taiwan Jungyou made a big success!  Kaio flew back to Narita from Taiwan on 21st and soon flew again to Fukuoka prefecture (his home county) to broadcast on TV there. The programme was held on 22nd.  He was very busy lately but he doesn't seem to be tired because everybody welcomes him everywhere.  He appreciates for that!

We are reforming a dohyo in our heya at this moment.  It takes two-three days.  Banzuke for aki-basho will be announced soon... on 28th.

Kaido retired as of 18th August 2006.  Thank you very much for your support for him for eight years.

Taiwan Jungyo

BY THE WAY, Kaio performs very well in Taiwan Jungyo!!!

Japanese fans - Mr.&Mrs.Matsuno who live in the USA went to Taipei (in Taiwan) to see Taiwan Jungyo.  They are big fans of Kaio.

They sent us a message from Taipei saying:

"Audience were very quiet first, however, whenever Kaio went on Dohyo, there were big applause and cheers loudly!
We are astonished and are happy with the fact that Kaio is very popular internationally.
On Saturday (19th), Kaio went on dohyo four times and won two by Uwatenage and one by Tsukidashi.
Audience were so excited by his powerful winnings!

In Taiwan, this Taiwan jungyo is broadcased accross the country very widely. The media introduced Sumo history, Keiko, etc. in very detail.  Kaio seems to be surprised by many cheers and support beyond his imagination!"

On the 12th there was "Sumo class" for kids at Tomozuna summer camp training.  Tomozuna rikishi taught them sumo and all of them seemed to have a good time. See the pictures on News!!

Kaisenryu's birthday was on the 13th of August.  He was celebrated for his birthday by the rest of members of the heya with a birthday cake!  He became 22 years old!

All Tomozuna rikishi returned from the summer camp training on 15th. From now, "keiko" is started again from tomorrow (18th.)

And, there is "Taiwan Jungyo" on 19th and 20th!

Kaio, Kaido, Kainowaka and Kaishinho returned from Jungyo and joined Tomozuna summer camp immediately on Friday night.

By the way, Kainowaka did "shokkiri" in jungyo.  He was newly selected to do this comical performance!!

Do you know "shokkiri"?

Shokkiri is a sumo(a bout) which introduces rules (winning tecnique and foul play) with comical touch.  It is very funny!
Shokkiri is demonstrated in only Jungyo or Hanazumo, etc, and is not demonstrated in honbasho.
Kainowaka said happily, "Audience seemed to enjoy my perfomance and I got a big applause!!".

It might be a good idea for you to see not only honbasho but also jungyo or hanazumo if you have a chance!!!

Hello, Everyone!

The first round of Tomozuna-beya's summer camp training was held from 31st  July - 7th August in Miyagi prefecture, and the second camp training is held from today(10th) to 15th in Chiba prefecture. Every rikishi got a good sun-tan and looks very nice!

Kaio, Kaido, Kainowaka and Kaishinho are now traveling for "jungyo" to Fukushima prefecture, Hokkaido county and Aomori prefecture from 5th August - 11th August. So, these four rikishi are traveling even more than others!!!

"Jungyo" means a tour to do sumo event in where "honbasho = Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep and Nov" is not held so that more people can go to see a sumo match. Jungyo is held overseas as well. This summer, an event is held in Taiwan in August.

To Kaishoryu

Congratulations on your 7-0 in Sandanme.

I hope you can continue to win in Makushita and surpass your previous highest position of Ms6. I read that your grandfather was also a Juuryou wrestler, so you should definitely fullfill your dream and become third generation of sekitoris in your family. :-)

Ganbatte kudasai!

Hello everyone!

We received some questions from people who sent us messages as you can see below. We think that it would be a good idea to put our answers to those questions on this space so that all of you get some information which might be new to you!!

So, here are these answers:

1. Tsukibito of Kaio are Kaido, Kainowaka and Kaishinho. We select the tsukibito intertwine and observing other works and jobs of the heya. So, they might change from time to time.

2. In March, special forum was started for sending encouragement and support to Kaio on SumoForum.net when Kaio was living on the edge, and so many people sent messages to Kaio to encourage and cheer him up.  With some fan's effort, those messages were sent to us, were translated to Japanese language, and were forwarded Kaio. He surely received them!!! Kaio was so impressed and was happy to know that there were so many his supporters around the world. He said, "the messages were really big impact for me. That is why I didn't give up until the end and got over the difficulties."

3. Kainohama is now a "teacher" of Ricardo who is also a Brazilian and who just joined Tomozuna-beya as a rikishi.  Kainohama gains great sense of responsibility as a "teacher" and as a "rikishi". He also tries not to be caught up by his juniour as a rikishi and tries his best to improve his sumo as well. This is good! The heya wants both of them to become good "rivals".
Kainohama wants to come back to "dohyo" in a basho as soon as possible aiming "sandanme" steadily.

By the way, when you sent us a message, could you include where you are sending from (country, city)? We want to know where you are from so that we can think of your country and feel much closer to you!!!

To Ozeki Kaio

Konichiwa!! I am so happy to be able to greet you and cheer you on. I was so proud of your last basho at Nagoya. I have been a fan of
yours for many years, first watching on a tiny computer picture where I live in New York City, and now I have live NHK TV so I am able to see you live on the big screen.

You represent all that is Sumo: You are brave, dignified and have the fighting spirit of a champion, I hope you become Yokozuna some
day, but you never disappoint me. Gambate!

To Kaido-zeki

It was so good to read about your goals and interests.  I will continue to follow you and cheer for you as you make your way back to Juryo.

If you like to shop -  come to New York City -  the capital of shopping!

I will be cheering you on next basho.

Hi Kainohama,

I am wishing you quick recovery from your injury - I noticed you were kyujo in Nagoya?!  Please post more information so you can feel the support from your fans.

Did you know you have fans even as a jonidan rikishi? At the english speaking fansite 'Sumoforum' we have a program of "adopt-a-jonidan-rikishi" and I would like to adopt you, which means I will follow each of your basho, log your progress on our website, and always give my support.  Please give me some news so that I can report how you are doing on your way to recovery!

Thanks to Tomozuna beya for opening the doors to your international fan-base, and please also include my love and respect for Kaio-zeki.

Gambatte!

Hello:

Thank you so very much for creating this English language site. I had not had the privilege of seeing the inside and workings of a beya until this site made it possible.   It is very informative and will add greatly to my understanding and enjoyment of Sumo.

My wife and I live in the middle of the United States, in Illinois.  We have been followers of Ozeki Kaio since we started receiving the English audio broadcast of  the Basho's. That has been about five years  now. The people at NHK recently were nice enough to increase the English audio broadcasts from 90 minutes to  two hours every night during the Bashos. The final night is two and one half
hours, so we get to see a lot of the awards ceremony which is also interesting and educational.  We enjoy it most when Kaio
is receiving his Yusho award.  Hopefully we will see many more of those in the future!

We also read the English language sumo web site:
www.SumoForum.net  .
During Kaio's recent kadoban, a special forum was started for sending encouragement and support.  I do not know if Ozeki Kaio ever received them?
The forum was flooded with many many messages of support and
encouragement for the great Ozeki from Tomozuna-Beya. And of course he performed like the champion he is , rewarding his loyal
fans with a  winning record!

Please excuse me for writing so much. Having the ability to connect with Tomozuna-Beya  is very exciting to us .
Again, we thank you for creating this site and we look forward to reading of many more victories by your Rikishi.

Best Regards,

Doug & Kathy DeShong

Your new English website is fantastic! Congratulations!

My question is, who are Kaio's tsukebito? We see them on television but I don't recognize them in the rikishi's pictures. What do they do to become a tsukebito? We attended the Sumo Event in Las Vegas and were disappointed that Ozeki Kaio was injured and unable to attend. Maintain your health and continue strong Sumo!

Thank you for your website. I have been a big fan of Kaio since his Sekiwake days. We are subscribers of JapanTV, via satelite, members of Bench Sumo, and Sumoforum, over 400 sumo fans all over the world.

Would encourage other beya to start websites. Great exposure, and educational, especially to get to know and follow progress of junior
rikishi.

Kaio-zeki,

I am so happy that Tomozuna-beya has an English language site on the web. I also want to tell you how inspirational you are as an Ozeki. You have a determination and tenacity that makes me feel that there is nothing one can't do if they keep trying.

Arigato gozaimasu,
Joe

To the Oyakata and Ozeki Kaio, who know me for  as the artist who has been following their world now for 33 years, creating drawings and paintings to show people around the world the beauty and power of SUMO.
This site, is Fantastic!!

It is clear and friendly, and will definitely have international impact on sumo.
I am so happy that you decided to do this, and will forward it on to many people who like my sumo artwork, but have not seen the "real thing".

Please continue to update this site and people will continue to be interested and bring in new fans.

I look forward to seeing you again during the September basho.

Dear Kaio-zeki,

Hello, how are you doing? My name is Mike and I live in Florida, USA. I am writing to tell you how much of a hero you are to me. I am very happy the Tomozuna Beya has created an English version of its website for people like myself whom do not read or speak Japanese. Kaio-zeki you bring inspiration to those of us who have been long time fans of yours. Your persistence even in the face if painful injury is truly heroic. I pull for you to win every single day of the basho. I am hoping you might still have a Yusho left in you for all of us to be super proud of you, even more then we already are. Kaio-zeki you are a true warrior and Samurai. You inspire us all. I only wish i had been able to see you when I was at the keon in Las Vegas. You keep winning Kaio-zeki. We are all pulling for you on this side of the world. Gambarize!!!!

Mike
